Why do you make an excellent "Tech Ninja"?
I would make an excellent Tech Ninja because technology is my biggest passion. I love to attend technology conferences, read blogs, twitter posts, and anything else I can find about technology. I do this for 3 reasons. First, I love to learn new things. I'm not happy unless I'm learning something new. Others look at me like I am such a tech nerd because I get so excited about new technology whether it be a new online tool, a new iPhone version, or a new gadget altogether. Second, I love to share my passion with my students and get them excited about learning new technology. I think it is important that I teach them new things that can be used not only in my class, but also help them to discover ways that this technology can be applied in other classes beyond my classes. I tell my students that I am giving them tools not only for 8th grade but tools they can use through high school and college. Third, I love to share my love of technology with other teachers. I feel like it is my mission to share my knowledge with others. In this day and age of shrinking budgets, many schools don't have access to extensive technology professional development. I work hard trying to work with teachers from beginners to advanced in giving them new technology skills and ideas to integrate them into their curriculum.
What are some of your favorite Web 2.0 tools, and why?
I love Twitter for two reasons. First it is an amazing Professional Learning Network. I have been able to learn amazing educators from all over the country. Second, I have started using it as a communication tool with my parents and students. They are loving the extra forms of communication.
I also enjoy using Facebook as a communication tool with my families. It is a great way for me to share what we are doing in class through pictures and status updates.
Another favorite Web 2.0 tool that I love is My Big Campus. It gives my students the freedom to use all the web 2.0 tools in a secure and monitored environment. It also gives me the opportunity to teach cyber safety and netiquette as well as making my job easier in many ways.
Why is technology important in education?
Technology is important because we are preparing our students for life and jobs in the 21st century. Technology is changing faster than we can keep up with. We must teach students to use technology in an appropriate and responsible way. Students must learn which tools are best to use in different situations so that they will be productive out in the real world. Most of what we have today will be outdated in about 2 years, so we as teachers must continually learn about the newest technology so we can keep teaching our kids the newest technology. Finally, we must also teach our students to be lifelong learners so that they can keep up with our world of ever-changing technology.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
I am a certified coach for My Big Campus. I was also selected as the 21st Century Educator Founder's Award Winner at the Lonestar TIA this past summer. I have presented several times at conferences including TAGT and Lonestar TIA. I have won numerous Keller ISD Foundation Grants and a Keller Hudson Grant to fund new technology in my classroom.
